Job Overview
The Registered Respiratory Therapist evaluates patients' pulmonary conditions, collaborates with physicians and nursing staff to create care plans, and administers respiratory treatments. This role also involves reporting any safety concerns, such as hazardous conditions or medical errors.
Qualifications
Required:
- Licensed as a Respiratory Care Practitioner in New Jersey
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association
- Must obtain certifications in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) within the first year of employment for all staff members
Preferred:
- Associate's degree (AA/AS)
- Certification as a Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC)

Essential Functions
- Follows documentation standards by contributing to a comprehensive care plan that includes input from patients and families, ensuring interdisciplinary collaboration. Records interventions in a retrievable format aligned with care plans and expected outcomes.
- Takes responsibility for reducing patient length of stay through timely clinical interventions and delegates follow-up respiratory treatments to appropriate team members.
- Administers CPR (Adult, PALS, NALS) as needed.
- Works closely with the Multidisciplinary Team to develop and monitor the overall respiratory care plan for patients.
- Collaborates with the Multidisciplinary Team to establish teaching and discharge planning requirements for each patient, ensuring desired outcomes are met.
- Partners with RNs to reinforce the care plan with patients and their families on a daily basis.
- Evaluates treatment orders, confirming their appropriateness and initiating therapies such as MDI, HFN, CPT, and aerosol treatments.
- Conducts thorough pulmonary histories and assessments during initial and follow-up therapies.
- Performs intubation in emergencies and extubation per physician orders.
- Manages the transport of patients on ventilators.
- Oversees care for patients requiring ventilation.
- Engages in monitoring patient care outcomes based on established targets and performance improvement initiatives.
- Participates in quality monitoring processes to identify factors that may extend patient length of stay.
- Assists in orienting new associates to service areas.
- Executes techniques and procedures for processing arterial blood gases (ABGs).
- Provides cardiac monitoring within the scope of practice.
- Responds to cardiac arrest situations and performs life support measures.
- Acts as a preceptor for new Respiratory Therapists in the unit or central department.
- Utilizes mentoring skills to enhance the knowledge and clinical skills of team members.
- Operates the Medication Pyxis in accordance with established guidelines.
