Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center is a teaching hospital that provides a full range of services, with state-of-the-art technology as well as education and research. The medical center is on a 119-acre campus that features 350 acute care beds. We provide health care services at 12 locations in southeast Texas.
Work Schedule: 8:00am-4:30pm, Monday-Friday
Salary: $330,000 to - $350,000 per year
- Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases
- Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME)
- Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA
- Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)
- Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory
- CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full-time with board certification)
- Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided
- Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting
- A successful candidate should be able to lead our complex general surgery program, which includes multidisciplinary clinics, conferences. Therefore, evidence of leadership skills and strong interest in academic medicine should be shown in CV. The candidate should have the ability to develop a research program in related fields to improve clinical outcomes for the Veterans' health care system and have the potential to contribute to the established research program in the General Surgery section. Furthermore, active interest and passion in the education of medical students and residents is expected.
- Duties include but aren't limited to:
- Skills and trainings in Special diagnostic or therapeutic procedures
- Interpretation of electrocardiogram, x-rays, lumbar puncture (with supervision)
- Incision and drainage of simple abscesses
- Suturing lacerations
- Closed cardiac massage and endotracheal intubation
- Aspiration or injection of joints (with supervision)
- Needle aspiration of tension pneumothorax
- Uses fluoroscopy procedures (with supervision)
